Jimmy Smits’ father Cornelis Smits was a Surinamese immigrant of Dutch descent owning a screen printing factory and his mother Emilina was a Puerto Rican nurse. His sisters are named Yvonne and Diana. When he was child, he spent most of his time in Puerto Rico. In 1980, he received bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College and in 1982, he earned MFA from Cornell University in 1982. In the series premiere of ‘Miami Vice’, Jimmy Smits appeared as Eddie Rivera. In the first five seasons of LA law, a long running drama, he appeared as Victor Sifuentes. On Pee Wee’s ‘Playhouse’, he appeared as Conky Repairman. In 1995, he became a part of My Family/Mi Familia. In the film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, he portrayed Princess Leia’s adoptive father. His was also seen in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

In ‘The West Wing’, he appeared as Congressman Matt Santos of Houston, Texas. Throughout the show, he ran for and won the US Presidency. He also appeared in the third season of ‘Dexter’ as Miguel Prado.

In 1981, Jimmy Smits married Barbara Smits. They divorced in 1987 and the couple has two children namely Taina and Joaquin. Currently, he’s with actress Wanda De Jesus and they reside in Los Angeles.

He’s the founding member of National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts. His other acting credits include: ‘Rockabye’, ‘Spenser: For Hire’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Hotshot’, ‘The Believers’, ‘The Highwayman’, ‘Stamp of a Killer’, ‘Glitz’, ‘Old Gringo’, ‘Vital Signs’, ‘Cop Rock’, ‘Fires Within’, ‘The Tommyknockers’, ‘Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child’, Murder in Mind, Lackawanna Blues and Cane etc.
