Richard Schiff took birth in the family of Charlotte, a TV and publishing executive and Edward Schiff, a real estate lawyer. He has two siblings and both are brothers. When he was at 12, his parents divorced. He received an equivalence diploma after dropping out the high school. In 1973, he attended City College of New York but soon he lost interest and gave it up before the final exams. His next move was to Colorado but he came back to New York in 1975. He once again started studying at City College of New York and got accepted into their theatre program.
Richard Schiff’s initial interest was directing rather than acting. In 1983, he directed ‘Antigone’ and several other off-Broadway plays. Later, he decided to try his hand at acting and started with minor roles in TV shows. In 1995, he was seen in the hit ‘Se7en’. In 1996, he made guest appearances on ER and NYPD Blue. In 1997, Richard appeared in ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ and soon got role of Toby Ziegler on the very successful drama ‘The West Wing’. In the 1998 remake of Dr. Dolittle, he appeared as a doctor along with Eddie Murphy. In the very same year, he made appearance on HBO TV movie ‘The Pentagon Wars’ and his next appearance was on ‘Deep Impact’. He also made appearance on an episode of Becker and was also seen in the movie ‘What’s the Worst That Could Happen?’.
In 2004, Richard Schiff portrayed Jerry Wexler on Ray. In 2006, he was seen in Civic Duty. He also appeared in the second season of ‘Entourage’. In the beginning of 2006, he starred in ‘Underneath the Lintel’. In February 2007, he appeared in its West End production. In the same year, we were seen portraying Phillip Cowen in ‘Burn Notice’. Next, he co-starred in ‘Last Chance Harvey’ and ‘Another Harvest Moon’ and in the season finale of ‘Eli Stone’. He was recently seen in the second season episode entitled ‘Complications’ of ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’.
He married Sheila Kelley in 1996 and has two children with her, a son named Gus and a daughter named Ruby. He’s lifelong member of Democratic Party and was Barack Obama’s supporter in the 2008 US Presidential Election.
